FORUM BACK ONLINE
Good news! After a long and week, the forum is back online!
Now the bad news: We are using a backup file from February, which means everything since then has been lost. Anyone whose account was created after February will have to go back and register a new account. Everyone else's postings will be reset to their status as of February.
Here's my tale of what happened:
Basically, a company called "FeaturePrice" was providing internet service for Mekada. Last month they went out of business, and all their assets were sold to another company called "Atlantic". FeaturePrice had thousands of customers, and everyone was assured that our accounts would be honored and the transition would go smoothly.
Then the next day the Gearhead Garage web site was off line, with no explanation. Mekada's people tried calling, e-mailing, etc. for almost a week but we were totally unable to get in touch with anyone at either company. Finally on 27 June, Mekada moved their web site to a different company. Although the web pages and updates were back online, the database for our beloved forum was still trapped on FeaturePrice's server. We assumed that Atlantic would eventually give it to us once they got their act together.
Then on 1 July, Atlantic posted this notice:
| Quote: | http://www.atlantic.net/temp/index.htm
"Atlantic.Net has been working with the former entity of Feature Price to transition Feature Price customers safely to Atlantic.Net. However, today the former entity of Feature Price denied Atlantic.Net employees access to Feature Price’s equipment. Shortly after this occurred, all service to Feature Prices customers ceased due to unknown factors at this time. Currently, Atlantic.Net cannot provide a time frame for service to be restored, however we are working closely with all available professional, legal, and law enforcement channels to restore services to Feature Price’s customers, just as quickly as possible.
Atlantic.Net apologizes for this interruption of Feature Price’s service. We got into this to try and restore some faith into the hosting community and to try and put the customers first. Yet this has been undermined at every turn to the ultimate loss of your web hosting service."
|
And then other customers started posting rumors on newsgroups:

The company who bought Featureprice, Atlantic.Net, was
in the process of transferring account information over when Featureprice refused to allow access to the servers (although Atlantic.Net owns them), going as far as to hire "body guards" and the such. It's a mess right now. Rumors are that all files have been deleted, as well as backups.

In the end, Mekada decided to give up waiting, and instead reset the forum using our backups from Februrary. It sucks, but at least it's better than having no forum at all. :-)
In all my years on the internet, I have never seen a company treat its paying customers this badly. Words like "scam" and "class action lawsuit" come to mind...
I apologize sincerely for the inconvenience. We are doing our best to prevent anything like this from happening again.
And welcome back to the forum, we missed you guys!
Cheers,
-Smokey
